US Stripe Plans to Acquire OpenRouter for Over $7 Billion

The final acquisition price may still be adjusted. Stripe and OpenRouter have not publicly announced the deal, and it has not yet been disclosed whether regulatory approval will be required or the specific closing arrangements.

OpenRouter provides a unified model routing and application programming interface, allowing developers to call AI models from different providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta through a single interface, and to select routing paths based on price, performance, and availability. OpenRouter currently offers more than 500 models, covering over 80 providers, with more than 10 million users worldwide.

In May 2026, OpenRouter completed a $113 million Series B funding round, led by CapitalG, a subsidiary of Alphabet, with participation from NVentures, ServiceNow Ventures, MongoDB Ventures, Snowflake Ventures, and Databricks Ventures. The round reportedly valued OpenRouter at $1.3 billion. At the time, the company disclosed that its weekly processing volume had grown from 5 trillion tokens six months earlier to 25 trillion tokens.

Stripe and OpenRouter had previously established a business relationship. In January 2026, Stripe announced that OpenRouter was using its invoicing and tax management products to provide billing, payment collection, and tax calculation services to global developers. At that time, OpenRouter was offering hundreds of AI models to more than 5 million developers through its unified interface.
