AMD to Acquire Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2 Billion

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 28, AMD announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs, an artificial intelligence research company co-founded and led by Dr. Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

Headquartered in San Francisco, World Labs primarily develops spatial intelligence and world model technologies. Its models can generate, reconstruct, and simulate interactive three-dimensional environments from text, images, and video, while also covering robot learning and simulation. In early September, the company released its next-generation world model Atlas, which can natively process text, images, video, and 3D inputs for three-dimensional environment generation and spatial reasoning.

AMD stated that after the acquisition is completed, the World Labs team will continue to conduct AI model research, and Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, reporting directly to AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su. AMD plans to leverage World Labs' capabilities in model research and development to further understand emerging workloads such as robotics, simulation, and physical AI, and to adjust its future AI hardware, software, and systems technology roadmaps accordingly.

AMD and World Labs have previously collaborated on technology and capital. World Labs completed approximately $1 billion in financing earlier this year, with AMD participating; the two parties had also previously conducted technical cooperation around model training and inference optimization on AMD GPUs. After the completion of this transaction, the related model research and development capabilities will be directly integrated into AMD's organization.
