Wedoany.com Report-Apr 1, Japan’s NEDO has announced a new solar development strategy to accelerate energy transition. The plan, called the “NEDO PV Challenges 2025,” outlines five key technical focuses: advancing next-gen solar cells, expanding solar systems for broader adoption, addressing diverse market needs, ensuring long-term stability, and creating a circular economy-driven recycling system.

The organization aims to build on previous roadmap initiatives like PV2030 and PV Challenges 2020, addressing four main hurdles: land constraints, varied market demands, long-term stability, and recycling end-of-life modules. NEDO will work on high-efficiency solar cells, such as perovskite, tandem, and III-V compound designs, while also developing cost-effective PV modules and flexible cell technologies. They plan to support innovative solutions like solar-integrated vehicles and aesthetic building designs to meet market needs.

Additionally, the strategy emphasizes enhancing operation and maintenance (O&M) technologies, solar forecasting, and safety guidelines for long-term stability. NEDO will focus on improving recycling processes for PV modules to promote a circular economy. The organization plans to release project calls under its “Solar Power Expansion and Technology Development Project” in mid-April, aiming to support innovations in solar energy.

This initiative aligns with Japan’s 7th Basic Energy Plan, which sets a target for renewables to contribute 23-29% of the energy mix by 2040. NEDO’s efforts are part of a broader effort to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with a focus on sustainable and scalable solar power solutions. Collaborations with universities and private sector partners are expected to drive innovation and accelerate deployment.
