Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 7, AFRY has secured a major contract for a significant transport project in Switzerland, marking an important step for its local public transport network. The company, working alongside engineering firms Pini and Lombardi, was awarded the planning contract for the Breganzona tunnel by Rete Tram-Treno del Luganese. This new project aims to transform the transport system in Lugano, combining the city center with the Malcantone and Vedeggio valleys. The tunnel will reduce travel time and enhance sustainability, making it a more eco-friendly option for commuters.

The underground station, Lugano – Railway Station SBB, located 40 meters below the tunnel, will function as an intermodal hub. This unique location will link trams, trains, and city buses, ensuring seamless integration with regional and national transport systems. By tripling the network's capacity—from 7,500 to 20,000 passengers daily—AFRY is aiming to make public transport more efficient and accessible. The first phase of the Tram-Treno network is set to begin operations in 2035, with AFRY expected to remain involved for the next ten years.

AFRY’s expertise in engineering, design, and advisory services will play a crucial role in bringing this complex project to life. The company, with a workforce of 18,000, contributes significantly to infrastructure and energy sectors. Meanwhile, in a related development, AFRY has initiated the design of a waste-to-energy facility near Mělník in the Czech Republic, set to be constructed by CEZ Group, providing heat for Prague.
