Southern UK Rail Network Applies AIVR System for Remote Monitoring of Conductor Rails
en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Southern UK rail network has deployed an Automatic Image and Video Recording (AIVR) system to enable high-frequency remote monitoring of conductor rail infrastructure, aiming to reduce manual inspection risks and improve maintenance efficiency. Conductor rails and their electrical components stretch for hundreds of miles along the line, carrying 750 volts of direct current that poses a direct threat to personnel near the tracks. Traditionally, deterioration issues such as hook switch burns, joint corrosion, and connection point overheating are difficult to detect and can lead to operational failures.
The system operates using multiple camera sets installed on in-service trains. Visible light line-scan cameras capture high-resolution images of the conductor rail from beneath the train, while thermal imaging cameras simultaneously record temperature data from electrical components. Boot-rail cameras monitor the interaction between the collector shoe and the rail, automatically detecting arcing. All data is transmitted in real-time to the AIVR platform via 4G/5G networks, allowing engineers to review images, perform annotations, and take measurements from their desks, significantly reducing the frequency of manual inspections in live environments.

For defect detection, the platform's built-in machine learning models automatically identify overheated assets, rail head contamination, metal corrosion, and unhealthy fishplates or joints. When temperatures exceed set thresholds, the system automatically sends email alerts with precise locations and readings. Automatic detection also covers conductor rail components such as fishplates, ramps, insulators, welds, and cable anchors, and measures joint gaps and ramp end gaps to track rail creep—which, if left unaddressed, can cause arcing incidents.

The AIVR platform displays thermal and visible light images side by side, enabling engineers to remotely identify and assess infrastructure issues.

Monitoring results for conductor rail contamination, corrosion, and debris support proactive maintenance planning. Before field work is required, forward-facing video helps teams conduct remote site surveys, identify access points and boundaries, reducing risks associated with approaching live environments. All inspection results can be exported as images, PDFs, videos, and CSV files for easy sharing with maintenance teams and infrastructure owners. This system transforms traditional patrol-based reactive approaches into proactive prevention, helping to reduce worker exposure and increase line monitoring frequency.
