en.Wedoany.com Reported - BAIC's Chief Operating Officer in Brazil, Oswaldo Ramos, stated at the e-Days 2026 event in Rio de Janeiro that extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) could become one of the next major electrification trends in Brazil, a technology already quite common among high-income groups in China. "China's elite class purchases extended-range vehicles," he said.

Ramos believes that the progress of the EREV architecture in China indicates it is also suitable for markets like Brazil, where charging infrastructure is unevenly developed. Unlike battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), EREVs are primarily driven by an electric motor, with the internal combustion engine serving only as a generator to charge the battery, not directly driving the wheels. This design retains the electric driving experience while alleviating range anxiety through internal combustion power generation. "This is a technology that will grow significantly," he said.

For Brazilian consumers, EREVs can travel tens to hundreds of kilometers on pure electric power for daily urban use, and during long-distance trips, the internal combustion generator intervenes to extend the total range to over 1,000 kilometers. This concept has gained momentum in China's high-value-added market segments, with brands like Li Auto, Leapmotor, and AITO heavily betting on such solutions.

In Brazil, EREV technology is still in its infancy, but it may gain attention as Chinese brands expand their local operations. BAIC has shown signs of pursuing a multi-technology route when entering the Brazilian market—although the Arcfox T1, recently discovered in tests in Brazil, indicates its offensive in the compact electric vehicle segment, Ramos's remarks suggest that the manufacturer's local strategy will not be limited to pure electric vehicles.
