en.Wedoany.com Reported - Four cargo ships carrying key fertilizer commodities such as urea, diammonium phosphate (DAP), and sulfur have successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz and are en route to major Indian ports, supporting the supply of agricultural inputs ahead of the 2026 Kharif season.
According to Indian government sources, the vessels are heading to the ports of Krishnapatnam, Kakinada, Paradeep, and Mundra. Upon unloading, the cargo will immediately replenish domestic reserves, strengthening supply security for farmers amid ongoing global trade uncertainties.
Officials from India's Ministry of Fertilizers stated that the country's fertilizer system has ample inventory. As of June 22, 2026, total stocks stood at 196.08 lakh tonnes, a significant increase from 168.67 lakh tonnes in the same period last year. Among these, urea stocks were 81.44 lakh tonnes (compared to 69.21 lakh tonnes last year), DAP at 20.92 lakh tonnes (compared to 16.0 lakh tonnes last year), NPK complex fertilizers at 55.91 lakh tonnes (compared to 46.13 lakh tonnes last year), muriate of potash (MOP) at 12.68 lakh tonnes (compared to 10.68 lakh tonnes last year), and single superphosphate (SSP) at 25.13 lakh tonnes (compared to 26.65 lakh tonnes last year).
Sales have also shown strong momentum. Between March 1 and June 21, 2026, total fertilizer sales reached 153.4 lakh tonnes, an increase of 13.2 lakh tonnes compared to the same period last year. The Ministry stated that this includes 79.1 lakh tonnes of urea, 34.8 lakh tonnes of NPK complex fertilizers, and 19.8 lakh tonnes of DAP (including triple superphosphate TSP).
To stabilize supply, both domestic production and imports have increased simultaneously. Post-crisis output reached 133.12 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), while imports during the same period totaled 43.69 lakh metric tonnes, reflecting a strategy combining local manufacturing with global procurement. In terms of procurement, India has contracted 17.70 lakh metric tonnes of urea in the latest round of global tenders, bringing the total assured supply of urea and phosphatic/potassic fertilizers for this Kharif season to over 90 lakh metric tonnes.
This procurement strategy has been implemented through diplomatic coordination at 28 Indian missions abroad, opening diversified import channels across multiple international corridors. Urea supplies have been successfully secured from Oman, Malaysia, Vietnam, Georgia, Nigeria, Russia, Finland, Egypt, Algeria, Turkey, and the Netherlands; DAP/NPK supplies have been obtained via Red Sea routes from Russia, Morocco, Egypt, the United States, Jordan, South Korea, Tunisia, and Saudi Arabia.
The Ministry of Fertilizers stated that it will continue to coordinate with states, distribution agencies, and cooperatives to ensure stable supply and continuous availability for farmers.
