en.Wedoany.com Reported - Red Eléctrica has completed the construction of the Don Álvaro 400 kV substation in the province of Badajoz, primarily designed to power the Puertollano-Mérida high-speed railway corridor and support the electrification of other railway corridors. This project is part of the reinforcement of the Extremadura electricity transmission network and has been included in the current electricity plan.

The newly built Don Álvaro 400 kV substation will strengthen the grid in Extremadura and power the Puertollano-Mérida high-speed railway corridor.

The project involves an investment of approximately €15 million, including the associated incoming and outgoing lines. The substation is connected to the transmission network via the Almaraz-Bienvenida 400 kV transmission line, and both the substation and the line are included in the list of projects funded by the European Union through NextGenerationEU and the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

This infrastructure forms a node in the Andalusia-Extremadura-Castilla-La Mancha-Madrid electricity corridor. Once operational, it strengthens transmission capacity in the region, which is considered critical for connecting major transmission lines and meeting new energy demands related to railway, industrial, and regional activities.

Red Eléctrica, a subsidiary of the Redeia group responsible for electricity transmission and system operation in Spain, links this project to the economic and industrial development of the region. The Don Álvaro 400 kV substation also facilitates the integration of renewable energy, with Extremadura consistently playing a prominent role in renewable energy generation within the Spanish electricity system.

This project is one of several new 400 kV infrastructures recently added in Extremadura, including the La Serena, Maguilla, Fuente del Maestre, and Fuente de Cantos substations commissioned last year, all part of the autonomous community's transmission network reinforcement process.

Red Eléctrica's plans in the region also include other projects. The incoming and outgoing line works connecting the Zarzón substation to the grid are expected to be completed this autumn, allowing it to enter service once connected. Meanwhile, the company continues to develop the new Guadiana and Río Caya 400 kV infrastructures, designed to meet the needs of large industrial users around Río Caya, an area considered strategic for promoting and consolidating the Badajoz Southwest Iberian Logistics Platform (Plataforma Logística del Suroeste Ibérico de Badajoz).

The investment projects under the current electricity plan aim to position Extremadura more favorably to meet new industrial demands, advance the ecological transition, and strengthen regional cohesion. These infrastructures expand the region's transmission network capacity and improve its connection to the main electricity corridors of the Iberian Peninsula.
