POWERGRID Wins 6GW Transmission Project with Annual Transmission Charges of Rs 3,244.33 Crore
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 2, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) received a Letter of Intent (LOI) for the inter-state transmission system project for evacuating 6GW of solar power from the Barmer-II Renewable Energy Zone in Rajasthan, awarded through Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB).
The project will be implemented on a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) basis, with POWERGRID quoting annual transmission charges of Rs 3,244.33 crore (Rs 32,443.3 million / Rs 3,244.33 crore).
The scope of work includes setting up 6,000MW, ±800kV High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter stations at Barmer-II in Rajasthan and South Kalamb in Maharashtra, along with the expansion of the South Kalamb substation. Additionally, approximately 1,000 km of ±800kV HVDC bipolar transmission lines will be constructed, passing through Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, along with the construction of 400kV transmission lines and associated bays in Rajasthan, and the installation of two synchronous condensers (SynCon) at Barmer-II.
The project is part of the evacuation infrastructure for the Barmer Complex under Phase IV (Part 5: 6GW) of the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Zone, with the project titled "Transmission System for Evacuation of Power from Rajasthan REZ Phase IV (Part 5: 6GW) (Barmer Complex) Barmer-II: 6GW (Solar) (LCC Configuration)". POWERGRID commissioned the transmission system for the 7GW Renewable Energy Zone in the Khavda region of Gujarat in July 2026, but the Barmer-II project is a separate new undertaking.
POWERGRID has currently received the Letter of Intent, and the formal contract is yet to be signed.
