Air Conditioning Use and Electricity Price Hikes Push Typical Spanish Household's August Power Bill to €91.7

en.Wedoany.com Reported - According to the monthly "Energy Thermometer" data from papernest Spain, the estimated electricity bill for a typical household in August stands at €91.7, of which approximately €10.4 comes from additional air conditioning usage, and around €2.7 is attributable to the rise in the Voluntary Price for the Small Consumer (PVPC).

This monthly analysis tracks the trends of the PVPC, electricity bills, and the wholesale market, drawing on public data from the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) and the Iberian Electricity Market Operator (OMIE). This edition of the report attempts to break down the impact of summer heat on household bills into two sources: increased electricity consumption and higher regulated tariffs.

In August, electricity consumption related to air conditioning was approximately 340 kWh, compared to an estimated 290 kWh in a scenario without air conditioning; the difference translates into an electricity cost of about €10.4. The average PVPC price for the month rose from €0.1603/kWh in July to €0.1665/kWh in August, an increase of 3.9%, adding roughly €2.7 per month to the reference household's expenses. Compared to July, the August bill was 5.2% higher.

The billing model assumes a contracted power of 4.6 kW, an annual consumption of 3,500 kWh, a 21% VAT rate, and a 5.11% special electricity tax. Year-on-year, the average PVPC price in August rose 24.9% compared to August 2025, while the typical household bill increased by 32.7%. The average wholesale market price for the month reached €118.2/MWh, the highest level since February 2023, which also explains the rise in electricity supply costs during the month.

The VAT rate remains at 21%. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for electricity in July stood at 8.4%, 6.6 percentage points below the 15% threshold required to activate the reduced 10% rate; had the 10% rate been applied, the reference household would have paid approximately €23 less in August. The next review is scheduled for September 30, when a new edition of the papernest Energy Thermometer is also expected to be released.

The estimated bill for September ranges between €78 and €83 per month. This forecast assumes reduced air conditioning usage, with consumption returning to approximately 290 kWh, coinciding with the timing of the next VAT revision.

Óscar Pacheco, energy analyst at papernest Spain, stated: "In August, high temperatures had a greater impact than electricity prices: air conditioning added about €10 to the bill, while the market increase added only about €3. The causes are different, and so are the solutions."
