en.Wedoany.com Reported - Global digital operator Veon (which owns Bangladesh telecom company Banglalink) has announced an initial anchor investment of US$250 million to drive a new initiative aimed at attracting US$1 billion in foreign direct investment into Bangladesh.

A delegation of executives led by Veon Chairman and Founder Augie K Fabela II has met with Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka to discuss the vision of establishing a comprehensive digital financial ecosystem in the country. Veon stated that the goal is to leverage its global fintech expertise to provide digital banking, microcredit, and microinsurance services to millions of underbanked Bangladeshis, thereby supporting digital and financial inclusion and helping individuals and small businesses create more economic opportunities.
Veon also outlined a framework for cooperation with the government, including the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and ICT, to launch a public-private partnership called "Invest in Bangladesh Now," aimed at attracting US$1 billion in foreign direct investment, backed by Veon's commitment of US$250 million over the coming years. The proposed investment directions will focus on advanced connectivity, next-generation digital infrastructure, digital financial services, and artificial intelligence. Veon stated that in addition to its own investment, it intends to leverage its global network to encourage other international investors to explore opportunities in Bangladesh's rapidly growing digital economy.
"By providing the anchor investment for this US$1 billion initiative, we are not only committing capital but also mobilizing global investment into the country's digital future," said Veon Group CEO Kaan Terzioglu in a statement. "Through Banglalink, we will accelerate the rollout of next-generation connectivity, scale up inclusive digital financial services, and advance AI-driven solutions to expand access, drive innovation, and solidify Bangladesh's position as one of the most promising digital economies in the region." Terzioglu added that Veon and Banglalink also aim to deepen their digital footprint in Bangladesh by exploring new growth areas, including digital banking, education, healthcare, agriculture, ride-hailing, IoT solutions, and advanced connectivity services such as Starlink Direct-to-Device (D2D) technology, which Banglalink plans to launch later this year.
