This project marks a key step in Costa Rica's digital transformation and continues Ericsson's long-standing commitment to advanced connectivity in the country.
ICE is Costa Rica's autonomous state-owned utility and telecommunications enterprise, with its telecom division operating under the commercial brand Kölbi, providing fixed and mobile connectivity services to citizens, businesses, and institutions nationwide. As the primary radio access network (RAN) and core network supplier for this project, Ericsson will deliver 5G RAN products and a comprehensive 5G core network solution, covering network slicing, built-in network security, open and standardized interfaces, advanced management capabilities, as well as LTE RAN expansions to enhance existing coverage and capacity.
This framework contract includes the deployment of Ericsson's dual-mode 5G core network, along with 4G and 5G RAN solutions, and the agreement also encompasses several pioneering implementations in the region. The project introduces the Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform (EIAP), Ericsson's network management and automation system designed for open, multi-vendor, multi-technology networks, supporting all 4G and 5G RAN and Ericsson core networks. ICE will be the first to trial Ericsson's AI-driven anomaly optimization rApps on the platform to improve detection, optimization, and resilience across the network.
Ericsson's solution meets ICE's technical and capacity requirements, supporting new 5G use cases in areas such as public safety, transportation, industry, and digital services. The solution architecture was developed in accordance with ICE's technical specifications and applicable regulations, and was selected following rigorous evaluation by ICE and regulatory authorities.
Under the agreement, Ericsson will drive the evolution of ICE's mobile network toward next-generation architecture, introducing automation, autonomy, and AI applications to enhance network management, delivery, and service assurance efficiency. ICE can build an efficient network on this foundation and differentiate its services through innovative offerings under the Kölbi brand. In terms of security, the project combines 5G standalone architecture, Open RAN principles, and advanced network security measures, protecting critical communications through security-by-design, extensive testing, and continuous vulnerability management, in compliance with international standards and ICE specifications.
