en.Wedoany.com Reported - Pune Metro Line 3 has confirmed the adoption of a 750V DC third rail power supply system, a technology that will place Pune among the few Indian metro cities using this standard.

This 23-kilometer fully elevated corridor from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar is the first line in Pune to deploy this system. The third rail system requires the installation of a conductor rail alongside the running track, with trains drawing power via collector shoes at the bottom, thereby eliminating the need for overhead catenary wires and supports. This type of system is suitable for high-frequency urban transport, reducing visual intrusion and maintenance costs while ensuring operational stability.
The corridor connects key areas including the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi with Wakad, Baner, Balewadi, University Circle, and Shivajinagar. By eliminating the need for overhead cables, the line contributes to a cleaner and more integrated urban transport infrastructure.
Additionally, Line 3 will deploy a Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system. As an advanced digital signaling system, it enables real-time tracking of train position, speed, and operational status, reducing train headways while maintaining safety standards.
Currently, the line has successfully completed end-to-end trial runs and is awaiting statutory approvals and regulatory clearances. The first phase will open the section from Maan to R. K. Laxman Museum, covering approximately 13.3 kilometers with 12 stations. The line will later be extended to the District Court, connecting with the Maha Metro network.
Once fully operational, travel time from Shivajinagar to Hinjewadi is expected to be reduced from the current 1.5 hours to approximately 45 minutes.
