en.Wedoany.com Reported - The cross-border train service between Sweden and Finland will resume operations in August this year. This government-funded route plans to run two trains per day in each direction, totaling 28 services per week. Passenger trains will once again stop in the center of Tornio after decades.

Finnish state railway company VR has signed an agreement with the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom to include this route in an existing public procurement transport contract. The cities of Oulu and Tornio, as well as the Sea Lapland Development Centre, will also provide financial support for the project.

The new route aims to improve railway accessibility in northern Finland and provide connecting services for passengers traveling to Sweden. Passengers can transfer at Oulu station to trains heading to Helsinki; Norrtåg, a Swedish northern train company, will operate the Haparanda to Luleå section.

Juho Hannukainen, VR's newly appointed Director of Traffic, stated that further optimization of transfers in Haparanda will be undertaken in December.

The launch of this service requires coordination between the Finnish and Swedish governments on border checks, customs procedures, and railway technical standards. Pipsa Eklund, Development Director at Traficom, believes that the new connection will help enhance passenger railway services in northern Finland.

Tickets will go on sale from June 30, 2026, with detailed timetables to be released at the same time.
