en.Wedoany.com Reported - On July 3, Swiss Federal Railways SBB launched the four-track expansion project on the Zurich–Winterthur railway corridor. The railway expansion project, named MehrSpur Zürich–Winterthur, is implemented by SBB on behalf of the Swiss federal government, with a total investment of approximately CHF 3.3 billion. The core works include the 9-kilometer Brütten tunnel and upgrades to stations along the route.

The railway expansion project covers a construction scope of approximately 30 kilometers, spanning the important commuter and freight corridor between Zurich and Winterthur. Upon completion, the line's capacity is expected to increase by about 30%, supporting approximately 900 train operations per day and serving over 150,000 passengers. The works also include upgrades to stations such as Wallisellen, Dietlikon, Bassersdorf, and Winterthur Töss, as well as modifications to connecting lines, bridges, and other supporting facilities.

The railway expansion project is expected to be implemented in phases, with an overall construction period of about 10 years. Tunnel boring for the Brütten tunnel is planned to commence in 2029, with current estimates for commissioning in 2037. During the construction period, most train services will continue to operate, but some S-Bahn services may undergo schedule adjustments in line with construction arrangements. Upon completion of the railway expansion project, it will alleviate bottleneck pressures on this busy railway corridor in Switzerland.
