Digicel PNG says it is 5G-ready, NICTA releases 5G spectrum proposals

Digicel PNG stated that during testing, its network achieved peak download speeds of up to 1.2 Gbps. Interim CEO Brett Goschen noted that the test results demonstrate the network's ability to deliver high-definition and ultra-high-definition streaming, enhanced mobile gaming experiences, and lower-latency real-time experiences for customers, while providing more reliable connectivity for businesses and laying the foundation for future digital services and innovation across industries. In a statement, Goschen said the successful completion of the test is an important step for Digicel PNG and the country's digital evolution, confirming that the network is fully prepared to support next-generation mobile technology, bringing faster speeds and greater reliability. He added that while the network is ready to launch 5G, commercialization will still take time, with specific timelines to be announced later.

The Papua New Guinea National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) has not yet released specific plans for allocating 5G spectrum and issuing new licenses, having previously focused on expanding 4G coverage and enabling Starlink services in unserved areas. However, NICTA has released two draft documents for public consultation, proposing the use of the 2300-MHz and 3500-MHz bands for 4G and 5G services. Under the proposal, telecom operators would need to obtain spectrum licenses (valid for 5 to 15 years) and base station equipment licenses (valid for 5 years). The deadline for feedback is July 15, but NICTA has not yet announced a timeline for issuing licenses for either band.
