en.Wedoany.com Reported - Norwegian renewable energy company Statkraft announced on July 7, 2026, that it will build a new wind farm in Santa Vitória do Palmar, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The first phase of the project has a planned installed capacity of 280 megawatts (MW) and an estimated investment of 1.5 billion reais. This is Statkraft's first greenfield project in Brazil since 2023.

Statkraft's Brazilian subsidiary is headquartered in Florianópolis. The wind farm is expected to begin operations in 2029 and, once completed, will meet the monthly electricity needs of approximately 500,000 households.

The Brazilian market accounts for 10% of Statkraft's global portfolio. Currently, Statkraft has 2.3 gigawatts of installed capacity in Brazil, encompassing hydropower, wind power, and photovoltaic power plants. Guilherme Melo, the company's Construction Director, stated that the project reflects Statkraft's long-term commitment to Brazil.

Statkraft's previous assets in Brazil were primarily concentrated in the Northeast region, which frequently experiences curtailment of renewable energy generation due to systemic issues. The choice of Southern Brazil this time is driven by the high-quality and stable wind resources in the Santa Vitória do Palmar area. Additionally, the region's proximity to the Southeast market, where electricity demand is concentrated, will help Statkraft optimize its overall power portfolio management.

Project development was previously initiated by Enerfín, which was acquired by Statkraft along with its parent company, Spain's Elecnor Group. Unlike other renewable energy developers, Statkraft has not yet brought in partners for this project but is still evaluating related opportunities, including data centers and battery storage. Brazil's first battery energy storage system auction will be held in December 2026, and Statkraft has not yet decided whether to participate.

This investment represents Statkraft's latest move in Brazil's renewable energy sector. In 2026, Statkraft also acquired Enerfín through its parent company, adding nine wind farms in Brazil with a combined installed capacity of 632 MW, located in Rio Grande do Sul and Rio Grande do Norte.
