en.Wedoany.com Reported - Mondelez Mexico is expanding its sustainability strategy, encompassing areas such as renewable energy, water conservation, circular packaging, and sustainable sourcing. These initiatives are based on findings from the company's "2026 State of Snacking" report, which indicates that consumers are exhibiting a trend of "productive tension"—seeking health-oriented products while also pursuing indulgent moments, without viewing the two as contradictory. Globally, 60% of consumers snack at least once a day; in Mexico, morning and afternoon remain the strongest snacking occasions. The study also shows that Mexican consumers are more inclined to choose products with lower environmental impact and expect greater transparency across the entire value chain.
In response to this trend, Mondelez Mexico has integrated its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy into the "Huella M" initiative, structured around three pillars: "Planet," "People," and "Practice." Under the "Planet" pillar, the company reports that 96% of its packaging in Mexico is designed to be recyclable; approximately 70% of electricity used in its manufacturing facilities comes from renewable sources; and water consumption at priority manufacturing sites has been reduced by 18% compared to 2018 levels. The renewable energy strategy is supported by a long-term power purchase agreement with Enel Green Power Mexico, which supplies up to 77 GWh of renewable electricity annually from the Amistad I wind farm to manufacturing facilities in the State of Mexico and Puebla. This electricity avoids approximately 33,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year, equivalent to nearly 80% of Mondelez Latin America's 2020 emission reduction target, and supports the production of over 100,000 tons of products, including brands such as Halls, Trident, Bubbaloo, Oreo, Tang, and Philadelphia. Paolo Romanacci, Country Manager of Enel Green Power Mexico, stated that more companies are recognizing that renewable energy is both sustainable and economically competitive, and that such power purchase agreements are becoming a significant driver for clean energy development in Mexico.
In the area of water conservation, as part of the "National Agreement on Human Water Rights and Sustainability," Mondelez collaborated with the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development of the State of Mexico, the Toluca Environmental Agency, and the National Chamber of the Transformation Industry (CANACINTRA) State of Mexico Chapter in wetland restoration activities at Tlachayola in Toluca. Over 300 volunteers participated in the cleanup, covering 1.7 kilometers and removing approximately 12 tons of solid waste (including tires and glass), as part of a broader municipal wetland restoration and water management infrastructure improvement initiative. These efforts complement broader operational improvements: since 2018, Mondelez has reduced global water consumption by 15% through production process optimization, and all its manufacturing facilities in Mexico are equipped with water treatment systems to enable water reuse in operations.
Under the "People" pillar, Mondelez Mexico reports a 31% reduction in product waste on its production lines. The company has maintained a partnership with the Mexican Food Bank Network (BAMX) for over 11 years, donating surplus products suitable for consumption. Globally, 100% of the cocoa used in its chocolate products is sourced through the "Cocoa Life" program. The "Practice" pillar focuses on strengthening ethical supply chain management and expanding the use of certified labels and product identifiers to meet consumer and regulatory demands for transparency. These initiatives support the company's long-term global strategy, "Snacking Made Right." Santiago Aguilera, Vice President of Corporate and Government Affairs for Latin America at Mondelēz International, stated that the deep connection between Mexican families and the company's iconic brands inspires the company to operate with full transparency, ensuring that everyone who enjoys its product portfolio trusts the company's genuine commitment to the planet, supported by efficient and responsible processes.
