Wedoany.com Report-May 1, Great British Nuclear (GBN), the organization overseeing the UK’s new nuclear initiatives, has announced a tender to appoint up to two owner’s engineers for its small modular reactor (SMR) programme. The initiative aims to advance the deployment of innovative nuclear technology in the UK.
“The Owner’s Engineer (OE) will provide essential independent assurance to the Intelligent Customer and Intelligent Client for the relevant SMR project,” GBN stated. “This will support the deployment of first-of-a-kind nuclear technology in the UK and facilitate GBN’s goal of reaching a Final Investment Decision(s) for up to two SMR projects.”
The OE will serve as a trusted advisor, offering expertise in specification, oversight, audit, and decision-making related to design, budget, risk, and contract compliance. It will also provide independent technical and delivery assurance for major design and construction contracts. The contract, valued at up to GBP600 million (USD799 million) for two potential awards, will depend on various factors. Each contract could be worth up to GBP300 million.
The contract term is expected to span 14 years, with a completion date to be determined after selecting the SMR technology partner(s). GBN emphasized opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to participate through supply chains, joint ventures, or consortia.
The tender process will begin with a notice on 2 June, and submissions will be accepted until 19 September. GBN anticipates announcing the contract winner(s) on 12 March 2026. The procurement involves two stages: first, tenderers must complete a Procurement Specific Questionnaire (PSQ) to meet participation conditions. Successful candidates will then submit detailed proposals evaluated on technical, commercial, and social value criteria.
This announcement follows recent developments in the SMR programme. Three of the four shortlisted technology providers—GE Hitachi, Holtec, and Rolls-Royce SMR—have submitted their final tender responses. Westinghouse, the fourth provider, has not yet confirmed its submission. GBN remains on schedule to select the preferred technology by summer, with a final investment decision expected in 2029.
The SMR programme is a key step in advancing the UK’s nuclear energy capabilities, focusing on innovative and efficient reactor designs to meet future energy needs.
