en.Wedoany.com Reported - Japanese fusion energy startup Helical Fusion has signed a memorandum of understanding with domestic construction firm Hazama Ando, which has officially joined Helical's official partner program. The two parties will jointly advance the construction of the fusion demonstration plant Helix KANATA in the 2030s. This collaboration aims to commercialize fusion research results from Japan's National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS), with Helical planning to achieve this goal through a helical stellarator design.

Helical Fusion's nuclear fusion approach

Nuclear fusion technology is seen as a potential solution to meet global energy demand without generating carbon dioxide or radioactive waste. Founded in 2021, Helical Fusion is dedicated to commercializing fusion research from NIFS. NIFS has sustained plasma for 3,268 seconds using the Large Helical Device (LHD) method and reached temperatures exceeding 100 million degrees Celsius. Helical plans to translate these achievements into commercial applications through a helical stellarator design. The company's commercialization roadmap, the "Helix Plan," includes two key milestones: the technology verification device Haruka and the demonstration plant Helix KANATA, with the latter aiming to achieve commercial fusion power generation in the 2030s. The official partner framework was launched in April 2026, initially with three companies joining. Partners are required to align with Helical's fusion energy vision in terms of strategy, technical collaboration, and financial commitments.

Hazama Ando has long-standing experience in power-related facilities and construction projects that ensure stable electricity supply. Company President Kazuhiko Kuniya stated that the firm will leverage its accumulated expertise and technology to contribute to the realization of fusion energy. Helical Fusion Co-founder and CEO Takaya Taguchi noted that the goal of the Helix Plan is not only to achieve commercial fusion power generation but also to bring humanity a new energy source capable of sustaining civilization for future generations.
