en.Wedoany.com Reported - Brookfield-backed open-access fiber infrastructure platform Intrepid Fiber Networks has signed an agreement to acquire Ubiquity's Southern California network, reflecting the ongoing consolidation trend in the fiber broadband market.
The acquisition brings an operational fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network in San Diego County into Intrepid's California portfolio, accelerating its open-access strategy in the region.
Through this acquisition, Intrepid immediately gains 35,000 fiber passings covering communities including Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside.

This complements Intrepid's ongoing network construction in Corona, Riverside, Vista, and San Marcos; combined, Intrepid's network in San Diego County will serve over 100,000 homes and businesses.
Subject to customary closing conditions and relevant regulatory approvals, Intrepid expects the transaction to close by the end of 2026. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"This transaction accelerates our strategy in California and is a natural complement to the construction work we are already undertaking there," said Jack Waters, CEO of Intrepid Fiber Networks.
Open-access networks remain an evolving segment within the broadband sector. Beyond California, Intrepid Fiber operates in multiple markets across Colorado and Minnesota, and has partnered with T-Mobile Fiber in several markets to serve consumers and businesses.
Upon completion of the acquisition of Ubiquity's Southern California operations, Intrepid will maintain the wholesale open-access model, consistent with its existing network base.
Waters noted that the acquisition is a bolt-on deal, enabling it to scale over time. "We are adding a well-designed, operational network with an existing customer base, strong municipal relationships, and a proven open-access deployment, all within a market our team knows well. Our goal is to integrate and expand the network," he said.
A key focus of the acquisition is maintaining operational continuity while prioritizing network expansion. Upon closing, operations and employees of Ubiquity's Southern California network will transition to Intrepid's management, and customers will continue to receive the same services through their existing internet service providers (ISPs). The Ubiquity Southern California team responsible for the network will move to Intrepid. While Intrepid has specific plans in place, it stated that network construction will continue at an accelerated pace as it expands services in the region.
