Ericsson completes cloud migration of MTN's MoMo mobile payment platform in four African countries
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Ericsson and MTN Group Fintech have successfully completed the cloud-native architecture migration of the MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) platform across four key African markets. The migration covers Eswatini, Ghana, Rwanda, and Uganda.

The project, implemented on the Ericsson Fintech Platform, migrated MTN MoMo from its legacy virtualized environment to a standardized cloud-native architecture. Following the migration, MTN reported an 86% reduction in CPU processing overhead and database load, along with an 80% improvement in API response times.
MTN MoMo is one of Africa's leading mobile payment platforms. According to official MTN data, MoMo recorded 67.4 million active users across 14 markets in the first quarter of 2026, processing 6.3 billion transactions worth USD 163 billion during the quarter. During the same period, MTN's fintech business revenue grew 22.4% year-on-year to USD 461.3 million. The MTN Group currently serves over 300 million users across 19 markets.
This migration is the latest development in the long-standing partnership between Ericsson and MTN, which has spanned more than a decade in mobile financial services. In January 2024, the two companies announced an expanded partnership, including the deployment of public cloud and the enhancement of the Open API framework across MTN MoMo's African operations.
This platform upgrade is a key component of MTN's "Ambition 2030" strategy, which aims to transform the telecommunications operator into a digital infrastructure and fintech platform. Artemij Demidczyk, Acting Chief Technology and Information Officer at MTN Group Fintech, stated that the cloud-native foundation is enhancing platform performance, strengthening resilience, and accelerating the delivery of innovative digital financial services to consumers, merchants, and partners.
Hossam Kandeel, Head of Mobile Money and Business Development for West and South Africa at Ericsson, stated that a modernized mobile financial services infrastructure is critical to supporting the continued growth of the digital financial ecosystem. The Ericsson Fintech Platform has helped MTN Group Fintech establish a cloud-native foundation, improving operational efficiency, strengthening platform performance, and providing the scalability needed to support future innovation and financial inclusion.
The migration effort continues to expand into additional markets. Migration is currently underway in Cameroon, with discussions also initiated in Benin, Congo (Brazzaville), and Zambia. Some MTN operating companies are also exploring migration to public cloud. With Africa's internet population projected to grow to approximately 1.1 billion by 2029, MTN is laying the groundwork for larger-scale growth through this platform modernization initiative.
