Thessaloniki Port Authority Advances €195.6 Million Pier 6 Expansion
en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Thessaloniki Port Authority has briefed Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs and Island Policy Vasilis Kikilias on the latest progress of its €195.6 million (approximately $224 million) Pier 6 expansion project. This initiative represents the largest investment in the port operator's history.

The project aims to expand berth capacity and deepen the channel, enabling the Port of Thessaloniki to handle large container ships, thereby strengthening its role as a commercial and transshipment hub for Southeast Europe. The Greek Ministry of Maritime Affairs estimates the related infrastructure works at approximately €200 million (about $229 million). The scope includes extending the pier by over 500 meters and dredging the channel to allow the port to accommodate larger, more modern vessels. The Ministry stated that the construction phase is expected to create and sustain approximately 20,000 jobs.
The Thessaloniki Port Authority (ThPA S.A.) signed a construction contract in November 2025 with the Pier 6 joint venture, comprising METKA S.A. and TEKAL S.A., with a total budget of €195.6 million (approximately $224 million) and an implementation period of 40 months. The official scope of work includes adding 513 meters in length and 306.5 meters in width, as well as dredging the channel and vessel maneuvering areas.
Upon completion of the upgrade, the Port of Thessaloniki is expected to accommodate ultra-large container ships with a capacity of up to 24,000 TEU and increase the container terminal's annual handling capacity from 650,000 TEU to 1.5 million TEU. The Thessaloniki Port Authority (ThPA S.A.) is responsible for the management and operation of the port under a concession agreement with the Greek government.
