en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Western Australian Government has announced an allocation of AUD 6.5 million over the next four years to support the development of the state's space industry. The funding will be distributed to the Australian Remote Operations for Space and Earth (AROSE) and Curtin University's Binar Space Program.

As part of the 2026-27 state budget, this funding includes AUD 4 million for AROSE Ltd and AUD 2.5 million for Curtin University to continue research, technology development, and workforce training in the space sector. The WA Government noted that the investment aligns with the "Diversify WA" framework, which identifies the space industry as one of nine priority sectors aimed at strengthening and diversifying the state's economic structure.

Curtin University's Binar Space Program is responsible for the design, development, testing, manufacturing, and operation of small satellites. According to the WA Government, four Binar satellites have been successfully launched since 2021, with three more expected to launch later this year. The program also provides training in satellite design, manufacturing, and operation for high school students, undergraduates, postgraduates, and doctoral candidates.

Perth-based non-profit alliance AROSE focuses on remote operation technologies for Earth and space applications. Its projects cover bushfire detection and response, agriculture, defense, and the development of new space and resource technologies. The WA Government stated that this funding will help both organizations scale up their operations and assist Western Australia in securing a foothold in the growing space industry.

Science and Innovation Minister Stephen Dawson said the allocation reflects the government's ongoing support for the sector. "The Cook Labor Government is once again looking to the stars, supporting our growing space industry with the latest funding," Dawson said. He added that Western Australia is well-positioned to participate in the industry's growth, stating, "Western Australia has the geography, expertise, and ambition to be a key player in the space industry, and we are ensuring the right conditions are in place to support long-term growth." Dawson emphasized that continued investment in AROSE and the Binar Space Program demonstrates the government's commitment to building the state's space capabilities. "Continuing to co-invest in AROSE and the Binar Space Program is a clear indication of our government's determination to enhance local space industry capabilities." He also noted that the funding aligns with the government's broader economic diversification strategy, stating, "The space industry is one of nine sectors identified under 'Diversify WA,' and it is through investments like these that we can continue to diversify and future-proof the WA economy."
