Oman's Omantel and GalaxySpace Evaluate LEO Satellite Connectivity
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 24, Omantel established a cooperation framework with Chinese commercial satellite company GalaxySpace, planning to evaluate next-generation satellite connectivity technologies in Oman. The two parties will conduct proof-of-concept, technical assessment, and testing of potential service scenarios around LEO satellite connectivity. Only after completing feasibility, performance, and commercial applicability assessments will they decide whether to advance specific services, business models, or expand cooperation. No commercial deployment timeline or investment amount has been announced yet.

The cooperation framework signed by both parties will be used to assess how LEO satellite technology can complement Omantel's existing terrestrial connectivity network, as well as the potential to deliver new services to consumers, enterprises, and government organizations. The initiative remains in the exploratory phase, with both parties set to conduct proof-of-concept, technical assessment, and analysis of potential service scenarios before making any commercial deployment or investment decisions. Omantel will evaluate the technical performance, feasibility, and commercial relevance of potential satellite services, with the findings expected to inform future service models or broader collaboration.
The scope of the cooperation assessment includes LEO satellite broadband and direct-to-device satellite technology, as well as how they can be integrated with Omantel's existing terrestrial communication networks. The scenarios to be evaluated cover broadband connectivity in remote and complex areas, enterprise and industrial communications, maritime and logistics connectivity, the Internet of Things, and the convergence of satellite and terrestrial networks. Both parties will also engage in technical capacity building, knowledge transfer, and joint technical learning.
GalaxySpace's existing LEO communication technologies include the "Little Spider Web" test constellation, consisting of 8 LEO broadband communication satellites, which enables continuous broadband communication for up to 30 minutes and has completed multi-satellite continuous communication and inter-satellite handover tests. On June 9, 2026, the China Mobile 02 satellite, developed by GalaxySpace, was launched to conduct technical validation tests for direct-to-device satellite connectivity and space-terrestrial network convergence. On April 24, another satellite internet technology test satellite developed by the company also entered its intended orbit, with test content including mobile broadband direct-to-device satellite connectivity and space-terrestrial network convergence.
