en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Meidai Pumped Storage Hydropower Station project in Inner Mongolia has officially commenced construction, marking another major green energy storage project for the Inner Mongolia power grid. Led by Inner Mongolia Power (Group) Co., Ltd., the project is located in Tumd Right Banner, Baotou City, with a total installed capacity of 1.2 GW and a total investment of approximately 8.2 billion yuan. The construction period is 75 months, and the first unit is expected to be commissioned for power generation in 2032.

Once operational, the station will generate approximately 1.526 billion kWh of electricity annually, consuming about 2.6 billion kWh of new energy each year, equivalent to saving approximately 880,000 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 850,000 tons. Inner Mongolia Power (Group) Co., Ltd. stated that this station is a major national engineering project and a landmark initiative for the autonomous region to build a national important energy and strategic resource base, promote high-quality energy development, and enhance the safe and stable operation of the power grid.

As a mature, reliable, large-scale, clean, and low-carbon energy storage method, pumped storage is indispensable in the construction of a new power system. In addition to the Meidai Pumped Storage Hydropower Station, Inner Mongolia Power (Group) Co., Ltd. is actively advancing projects such as the Wuhai Pumped Storage, Taiyanggou Pumped Storage, and Halaqin Pumped Storage hydropower stations. Once all projects are commissioned, they will form a cluster with the already operational Hohhot Pumped Storage Hydropower Station, and synergize with new energy storage resources within the grid to enhance the regulation capacity of the Inner Mongolia power system and the level of new energy consumption.
