en.Wedoany.com Reported - A 138-kilowatt solar installation near Martha's Vineyard Hospital in Massachusetts has recently been completed, with developer PowerOptions Connect stating that the project showcases a new energy model combining commercial solar development with community benefits. Located in a hospital employee housing development, the installation is expected to save over $550,000 in electricity costs for income-eligible island households over the next 25 years.

The project was developed by PowerOptions Connect with assistance from Vineyard Power and the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center. Michael Cosgrave, Chief Administrative Officer of Martha's Vineyard Hospital, said the project integrates solar energy into employee housing and collaborates with Vineyard Power and PowerOptions Connect to reduce emissions while creating localized clean energy resources for island households facing high energy costs.

This project is the first completed under PowerOptions Connect's SolarShare program, which aims to transform institutional solar projects into revenue streams with community benefits, supplementing energy savings from solar projects with one-time grants and philanthropic capital. With the installation complete, Vineyard Power's Resiliency and Affordability Program Advisory Committee will oversee the distribution of benefits.

Rather than retaining all economic value on-site, the Martha's Vineyard Hospital project can allocate up to 50% of financial benefits to island households with higher energy consumption. This community benefit framework is made possible by a grant from Vineyard Power's Resiliency and Affordability Program. Richard Andre, President of Vineyard Power, noted that the program stems from community benefits from Vineyard Wind, aiming to promote renewable energy generation, enhance resilience, and advance energy affordability through local initiatives. Vineyard Power can leverage existing programs to identify the most in-need households on the island, including residents benefiting from utility discount rates and low-income community shared solar projects.

Dan Lesser, Senior Project Manager at PowerOptions Connect, stated that the SolarShare program creates a way for mission-driven organizations to use solar projects to support the populations they serve, while allowing donors to fund work with measurable local impact. The company said this new approach will benefit the future development of PowerOptions Connect and other solar companies in the Northeast, enabling nonprofit and public entities not only to develop renewable energy on-site but also to direct some economic benefits directly to households in need.
