Berkeley School Proposes 40-Unit Apartment Project, Submits Permit Application
en.Wedoany.com Reported - A preliminary permit application has been submitted for the property at 2032 Francisco Street, near downtown Berkeley in Alameda County, where the owner, The Berkeley School, plans to construct a six-story apartment complex. The project will demolish the preschool campus currently used by the school and build 40 new apartments. The site is located near the intersection of Shattuck Avenue and University Avenue.
According to the pre-application documents, the building will be 69 feet tall, with a total area of approximately 58,450 square feet, including 48,220 square feet of residential space and a 51-car garage spanning 10,230 square feet. Among the 40 residential units, three will be deed-restricted for extremely low-income households. The project is situated between Shattuck Avenue and Milvia Street, just a few blocks from the intersection of Shattuck and University Avenue.
The building to be demolished is a single-story, non-landmark commercial structure currently used as The Berkeley School's preschool campus. Founded in 1963 as the Berkeley Montessori School, The Berkeley School serves students from preschool through eighth grade. The preschool program is located at 2030 Francisco Street, while the K-8 program is at 1310 University Avenue, over a mile away, near the North Berkeley BART station. The school has not yet responded to YIMBY's request for comment.
