For over two decades, the International Space Station has been the only inhabited large laboratory in low Earth orbit, but this situation may soon change. Haven-1 is designed to accommodate up to four astronauts, whether from space agencies or private entities, for missions lasting up to two weeks.

The space station has a habitable volume of approximately 45 cubic meters, featuring areas for scientific research, microgravity experiments, materials manufacturing, and technology development, as well as a large panoramic window for Earth observation. During missions, the Crew Dragon spacecraft will visit the station and provide power and life support.

This project comes as NASA prepares for the post-ISS era. The International Space Station is expected to be deorbited by the end of 2030 or early 2031, with the final decision depending on the maturity of commercial alternatives under development.

For Vast, Haven-1 is just the first step. The company plans to further develop Haven-2, a larger modular space station designed to be one of the successors to the ISS.
