Wedoany.com Report-May 11, Singapore has established Singapore GasCo, a new government-owned entity tasked with centralizing the procurement and supply of natural gas for the city-state’s power sector. The announcement was made by the Energy Market Authority, highlighting the critical role of natural gas, which constitutes approximately 95% of Singapore’s electricity generation, in achieving the nation’s 2050 net-zero emissions target.

Singapore GasCo aims to optimize the gas supply chain by consolidating procurement for power generation companies. This approach is designed to achieve economies of scale, secure more favorable contract terms, source gas from diverse suppliers, and establish longer-term agreements to ensure stable supply and pricing. The initiative reflects Singapore’s commitment to maintaining a reliable and efficient energy system while supporting sustainability goals.

Alan Heng has been appointed as the CEO of Singapore GasCo. With over 37 years of experience in the energy sector, Heng previously served as Group CEO of Pavilion Energy until March 2025. Before that, he held senior roles in planning, operations, and marketing at ExxonMobil for 23 years, bringing extensive expertise to his new position.

An Energy Market Authority spokesperson stated: “Singapore GasCo will enhance the efficiency and resilience of our natural gas supply, supporting Singapore’s energy needs and long-term environmental objectives.” The centralized model is expected to streamline operations and strengthen Singapore’s position in the global energy market.

By diversifying gas sources and negotiating longer-term contracts, Singapore GasCo aims to mitigate price volatility and supply risks, ensuring a steady energy supply for the power sector. This strategic move aligns with Singapore’s broader efforts to balance energy security with environmental sustainability, leveraging natural gas as a key component of its energy transition.

The formation of Singapore GasCo underscores the government’s proactive approach to managing energy resources, fostering stability, and supporting the power sector’s contribution to economic and environmental goals in Singapore.
