Indian Solar Manufacturing to Hit 160 GW of Modules, 120 GW of Cells by 2030
Wedoany.com Report-May 9, India’s solar manufacturing sector is poised for substantial growth, with a new report from SolarPower Europe and the National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI) projecting significant increases by 2030. Solar module manufacturing capacity is expected to double from 80 GW in 2025 to 160 GW. Solar cell production capacity is forecasted to rise from 15 GW to 120 GW, while wafer and polysilicon capacities are projected to grow from 6 GW to 100 GW over the same period.
This expansion underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its domestic solar manufacturing capabilities to meet renewable energy targets and reduce reliance on imports. The country aims to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, with solar power playing a central role. In February 2025, India surpassed 100 GW of installed solar capacity (AC), with over half of this added in the past three years, reflecting rapid progress in renewable energy deployment.
Annual photovoltaic (PV) installations in India surged by 145% to 30.7 GW in 2024 and are expected to increase by 21% to 37.3 GW in 2025. To meet its 2030 renewable energy goals, India plans to install an additional 200 GW of solar capacity within the next five years. The report estimates that India’s cumulative installed solar PV capacity will range between 280 GW and 320 GW (AC) by 2030, depending on low- or high-growth scenarios.
Deepak Gupta, NSEFI chairman, stated: “India’s solar manufacturing growth is a critical step toward energy self-reliance and meeting our ambitious renewable energy targets. The expansion of module, cell, and wafer production will drive job creation and strengthen our supply chain.”
The projected growth in manufacturing capacity is supported by favorable policies and investments aimed at scaling up domestic production. By enhancing its solar supply chain, India seeks to ensure a reliable supply of components for its expanding solar projects, reducing dependence on foreign markets. This aligns with efforts to bolster energy security and promote sustainable economic development.
India’s rapid increase in solar installations and manufacturing capacity positions it as a key player in the global renewable energy sector. The anticipated growth to 2030 will support the country’s transition to clean energy, contributing to environmental sustainability and economic opportunities through local production and job creation.
