en.Wedoany.com Reported - Canada's Cedar LNG joint venture has received regulatory approval to increase the capacity of its liquefied natural gas project in Kitimat, British Columbia, and adjust the maximum number of workers on the floating LNG facility to 80.
Cedar LNG is a joint venture between Canada's Pembina Pipeline Corporation and the Haisla Nation. Previously, Cedar LNG Partners submitted an application to the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) requesting changes to its planned floating LNG facility and marine export terminal project. In a recent statement, the agency said it had approved the changes and amended the environmental assessment certificate for Cedar LNG, which was originally issued in 2023.
Under the amended certificate, the maximum number of workers on the floating LNG facility is set at 80, and the natural gas liquefaction capacity has been increased from 400 million standard cubic feet per day to 500 million standard cubic feet per day. The EAO stated in its announcement that, after assessing the nature of the physical changes to the project and their potential new impacts on the environment and Indigenous rights and interests, the agency determined that the amendment would not result in significant adverse effects. However, the proposed changes also require an amendment to the Impact Assessment Act decision statement and approval from British Columbia's energy regulator.
In terms of project engineering progress, South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries launched Cedar LNG's floating LNG production unit (FLNG) last month. The shipyard plans to complete commissioning in the first half of 2028 and deliver an FLNG with a nameplate capacity of 3.3 million tonnes per year. Construction of the FLNG officially began in June last year, after Cedar LNG issued a notice to proceed to Samsung Heavy Industries and Black & Veatch following the finalization of long-term commercial offtake agreements. Samsung Heavy Industries is responsible for the FLNG hull and topside process units, while Black & Veatch provides its PRICO technology.
Pembina management stated in a business update in April that the $4 billion Cedar LNG project remains on budget and on schedule, with production expected to begin by the end of 2028. The project's equity structure is 50.1% held by the Haisla Nation and 49.9% by Pembina, with the project located within the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation.
