Beetaloo Digital, a spin-off from oil and gas exploration company Beetaloo Energy, plans to build up to two hyperscale AI data center campuses, powered by on-site generation facilities of up to 2GW, fueled by Beetaloo natural gas. Currently, over a dozen data center developers, including Energy North's Project Ares—which plans a 1GW project at Morang Station in the Barkly region—are eyeing the Northern Territory.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro stated that Beetaloo Digital's proposal highlights the Territory's status as a natural hub for data center development. She noted that data center proponents are bullish on the Northern Territory due to its commitment to providing reliable and affordable electricity from Beetaloo natural gas, supplemented by renewable energy, as well as its proximity and strong connectivity to major Asian markets and digital superpowers. The Northern Territory possesses all the elements needed for national development, including energy, digital capabilities, defense, minerals, and agriculture.

Under a "no-deal" arrangement, the Northern Territory Government has committed to granting Beetaloo Digital exclusive rights to plan for the 185-hectare site, while the company advances the project and conducts feasibility studies. Beetaloo Energy Managing Director Alex Underwood welcomed the Northern Territory Government's commitment to supporting the development. He believes data centers are essential infrastructure for the digital economy, capable of driving investment, innovation, and new industries. The decision by Finocchiaro's CLP government gives Beetaloo Energy the confidence to advance the next phase of this major project and solidifies the Northern Territory's position as a future hub for digital infrastructure and investment.
