Toshiba Wins Order for 200MW Unit 3 at Kyogoku Pumped Storage Power Plant
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation has received an order from Hokkaido Electric Power to supply a variable-speed pumped storage power generation system for Unit 3 of the Kyogoku pumped storage power plant in Hokkaido, Japan.

The order covers a 200MW variable-speed pump-turbine and related power generation equipment. Unit 3 is scheduled to commence operation in fiscal year 2031, bringing the plant's total installed capacity to 600MW with three units.
The project comes as electricity demand in Hokkaido is expected to grow due to the expansion of semiconductor manufacturing and data centers, while the continued deployment of renewable energy increases the need for grid balancing services.
The equipment supplier stated that its experience in providing variable-speed systems for Kyogoku pumped storage Units 1 and 2 (which entered commercial operation in 2014 and 2015, respectively), as well as its broader expertise in this technology, contributed to securing the contract.
According to the company, it commercialized the world's first variable-speed pumped storage power generation system in 1990 and has since supplied the technology for multiple projects in Japan and overseas. The company also noted that since providing equipment for Japan's first commercial hydropower plant in 1894, it has delivered over 2,700 hydropower facilities with a total installed capacity exceeding 68,700MW.
