en.Wedoany.com Reported - Esh Construction has completed a £1.3 million repair project for the Abbeydale Dam in Sheffield, UK, restoring the historic structure and ensuring the long-term preservation of this important industrial heritage asset.
The project was commissioned by Sheffield City Council, in collaboration with Sheffield Museums Trust, and carried out within the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet. The hamlet is a scheduled ancient monument and is recognized as one of the world's best-preserved integrated water-powered industrial sites.
Repair work began in 2021 after the 18th-century dam experienced significant leakage, with water escaping from the northeast corner, creating pressure behind the historic stone structure. Temporary stabilization measures were implemented before a permanent repair solution was determined.
The scope of work included: rebuilding and repointing displaced stone walls using traditional masonry techniques, installing clay liners and waterproof membranes to prevent future leakage, grouting voids within the structure, reinforcing the forge wall adjacent to historic buildings, and constructing a new concrete foundation. Portions of the dam were rebuilt using traditional lime mortar, compacted clay, and bentonite membranes.
During construction, a temporary causeway was built over the reservoir to provide safe access for construction activities while maintaining water levels and protecting the surrounding environment.
Michael Sherrard, Construction Manager at Esh Construction, stated that the successful completion of the Abbeydale Dam is a remarkable achievement for all involved. Working within such a significant historic site required a meticulous approach, combining modern engineering expertise with traditional conservation techniques to secure the dam's future while preserving its heritage value. Sherrard noted that close collaboration between Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Museums Trust, Historic England, design partners, and the specialist supply chain was crucial throughout the project, collectively finding a solution to protect this important landmark.
Sherrard added that water management of the dam and the nearby River Sheaf was a key consideration throughout the project, aiming to create safe working areas while protecting water quality, sensitive ecology, and heritage features.
Due to the protected status of the site, all works were approved by Historic England and carried out under a permit from the Environment Agency.
Kim Streets, CEO of Sheffield Museums, stated that the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is a jewel in Sheffield's industrial heritage, and thanked the council and Esh Construction for their careful work in preserving it for future generations. Prior to the completion of the dam project, the hamlet itself had undergone renovations, including the construction of a new playground and welcome center. This repair project was carried out in parallel with broader improvements to the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet under Sheffield Museums' "Embrace Abbeydale" program, which is supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to enhance visitor facilities and site accessibility.
