Wedoany.com Report-May 25, Bilfinger UK, an engineering and maintenance firm, has secured a significant contract with National Gas to maintain the continuous flow of gas through the National Transmission System (NTS) pipelines in the United Kingdom. The project is expected to create up to 100 jobs, with Bilfinger UK acting as the principal designer and contractor at key sites.
The Control System Refurbishment project, backed by Ofgem, will see Bilfinger UK executing a comprehensive design and construction programme.
The NTS relies on strategically located compressor stations equipped with multiple units to pressurize and move gas through the network at speeds up to 40 km/h. Supported by the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem), the Control System Refurbishment project involves Bilfinger UK undertaking a comprehensive design and construction program, including panel design and manufacturing, while ensuring high safety and performance standards as the principal contractor.
Following two years of front-end engineering design, Bilfinger UK will now execute a three-year work program, adopting a two-stage approach that emphasizes early contractor involvement. The company’s Engineering, Automation, and Production divisions will collaborate to deliver integrated solutions. The primary design team, based at Bilfinger UK’s headquarters in Warrington, will work with teams in Chesterfield, St. Helens, and on-site locations. The team will consist of 40–50 members during the design phase, expanding to up to 100 during peak construction.
Ben Hill, Gas Framework Director at Bilfinger Engineering & Maintenance UK, stated: “This contract is a testament to our successful collaboration with National Gas and our readiness to take the project forward into detailed design, build and commissioning. By utilising resources from our Engineering, Automation and Production teams, we are well-equipped to deliver comprehensive solutions that meet the highest standards of safety and performance. Our partnership with National Gas reflects our commitment to innovation, efficiency and sustainability and we look forward to continuing our collaboration to meet the challenges of net zero.”
In February 2024, Bilfinger UK also secured a three-year contract with INEOS FPS, with an option for a two-year extension, to provide maintenance services for the Forties Pipeline System (FPS) in Scotland. Effective from January 2024, this agreement builds on a decade-long partnership, ensuring the reliability of the 169 km pipeline system critical for North Sea oil and gas transport and processing.
