Russian Gas Supplies to Armenia Suspended for 10 Days Due to Pipeline Maintenance
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 14, Gazprom Armenia, a subsidiary of Gazprom, announced that due to planned preventive maintenance and comprehensive overhaul of the North Caucasus–Transcaucasus trunk gas pipeline within Russian territory, Russian natural gas supplies to Armenia via this pipeline will be temporarily suspended from September 15 to 25, a suspension period of 10 days. This adjustment is part of planned maintenance of cross-border natural gas transmission facilities and does not constitute a suspension of gas at Armenia's domestic natural gas consumption end.
During the maintenance period, natural gas supply to consumers in Armenia will remain normal. Gazprom Armenia stated that it will make up for the Russian gas supply gap through domestic natural gas reserves and increased natural gas imports from Iran, and that no restrictions on gas supply to consumers nationwide are planned during this period. The company did not disclose the average daily reduction in Russian natural gas involved in this 10-day suspension, nor the specific scale of increased imports from Iran.
Armenia currently has two natural gas import channels: the Russian direction and the Iranian direction. According to official information from Gazprom Armenia, the Iran–Armenia natural gas pipeline has a total length of approximately 190 kilometers and is Armenia's second natural gas import channel besides the northern import route. The company also operates the Abovyan underground gas storage facility, equipped with 21 underground gas storage wells and compression facilities, which can participate in domestic gas supply regulation during cross-border pipeline maintenance.
Russia remains Armenia's main source of natural gas. The original report cited data stating that in 2025, approximately 82% of Armenia's natural gas imports came from Russia. Gazprom Armenia is responsible for the supply and sale of Russian natural gas in Armenia's domestic market and operates Armenia's main natural gas transmission and distribution infrastructure. Its official information shows that the total length of trunk and branch natural gas pipelines operated by the company is approximately 1,668.5 kilometers, of which approximately 1,580.94 kilometers are used for natural gas transmission.
The end date of this maintenance is scheduled for September 25. The gas supply arrangements announced at this stage cover only the maintenance window, and Armenia's domestic gas supply will be supplemented jointly by reserve gas sources and additional supply from Iran.
