Wedoany.com Report-May 28, French nuclear fuel cycle company Framatome has signed a contract with Kernkraftwerk Leibstadt AG (KKL) to supply Atrium 11 fuel assemblies to the Leibstadt nuclear power plant in Switzerland. The supply period will span from 2028 to 2035.

Leibstadt is the most powerful nuclear power plant in Switzerland, generating around one seventh of all Swiss electricity generation.

Framatome described Atrium 11 as its most advanced fuel product for boiling water reactors (BWRs). The 11×11 fuel rod configuration is designed to enhance safety and reduce fuel cycle costs. According to the company, the unique geometry of the fuel assemblies enables greater energy extraction from the fuel while lowering the energy load on individual rods.

Framatome has been working with KKL since 2008 and began delivering Atrium 11 fuel assemblies to the Leibstadt facility in 2012.

Leibstadt is Switzerland’s most powerful nuclear power station, with an output of 1,285 megawatts. It accounts for approximately one-seventh of the country’s electricity generation and provides energy for around two million households daily. In 2024, the plant generated 9,636 GWh of electricity, marking one of its highest annual outputs since operations began in 1984.

In addition to this contract, Framatome signed an agreement in March 2025 to modernise the instrumentation and control systems at the Leibstadt plant.

Last month, Framatome was also selected by Kernkraftwerk Gösgen-Däniken AG (KKG) as the long-term supplier of nuclear fuel assemblies and related services for the Gösgen nuclear power plant. This reflects the company’s growing role in Switzerland’s nuclear sector.

Switzerland operates four nuclear reactors located at three sites: Beznau-1, Beznau-2, Gösgen, and Leibstadt. Together, they contribute roughly one-third of the country’s electricity supply.

These new agreements strengthen Framatome’s position as a long-term partner in Swiss nuclear energy production and support the continued operation of the country's nuclear infrastructure.
