en.Wedoany.com Reported - Amazon will invest $1 billion to establish the AWS Forward Deployed Engineering team. This team of artificial intelligence engineers will work on-site at client locations, deploying AI agent systems in days rather than months.

The division's initial clients include the Allen Institute for AI, Cox Automotive, NBA, NFL, Ricoh, and Southwest Airlines.
The role of forward-deployed engineer (FDE) is rapidly gaining popularity. Once a niche profession, it has become one of the most in-demand positions in the enterprise AI sector; since January 2025, FDE job postings have grown significantly, with Anthropic, OpenAI, Palantir, Stripe, and Google Cloud all expanding their hiring in this area.
The rise of FDEs has been largely driven by Palantir. These engineers customize software through direct interaction with clients, with work that sits at the intersection of software development, consulting, and product deployment.
Kanav Bhatnagar, a senior deployment engineer at Rippling, explains that instead of developing products remotely, he now interacts directly with clients, understanding their business characteristics before integrating AI systems into their workflows. Bhatnagar's primary task is to listen to clients and understand their problems; according to him, he spends roughly equal time on programming and collaborating with product teams.
OpenAI has also assembled a team of deployment engineers after realizing that clients need more than just access to AI models. Last year, Oliver Jay, OpenAI's Managing Director of International, stated that hiring FDEs is "a very concrete way to accelerate the rollout of advanced AI into scalable production scenarios."
According to Business Insider's analysis of Indeed job postings, annual salaries for deployment engineers in the U.S. range from $170,000 to $200,000; OpenAI offers FDE positions salaries of up to $345,000 per year.
Late last month, Amazon internally identified budget overruns across multiple AI-related projects, with one initiative exceeding its budget by $1.8 million.
