Wedoany.com Report-May 30, Evonik, a specialty chemicals company, and Gas Malaysia have partnered to advance renewable energy through Malaysia’s first biomethane injection site, utilizing Evonik’s Sepuran Green membrane technology. This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Collaboration, supports the upgrading of biogas into biomethane, contributing to Malaysia’s sustainable energy infrastructure. The initiative was celebrated at the site’s inauguration, attended by YB Datuk Seri Johari bin Abdul Ghani, Minister of Plantation and Commodities, and recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records as a historic milestone.

Sepuran Green membranes designed to upgrade biogas into high-quality biomethane that can be directly fed into local natural gas grids

Evonik’s Sepuran Green membranes employ a three-stage separation process to produce high-purity biomethane efficiently, maximizing methane recovery while reducing energy use compared to conventional methods. This technology enhances the site’s ability to supply clean energy, aligning with Malaysia’s goals to expand renewable energy sources and reduce carbon emissions. The biomethane supports local energy consumption, particularly for industrial and commercial applications, without impacting trade dynamics.

Dr. Jan-Olaf Barth, head of Evonik’s High Performance Polymers business line, stated: “By integrating our advanced membrane technology into Malaysia’s energy infrastructure, we are paving the way for lower carbon emissions and expanding green energy opportunities.” The partnership underscores Evonik’s commitment to providing innovative solutions for sustainable energy production, while Gas Malaysia strengthens its role in delivering cleaner energy to the nation.

The biomethane injection site, owned by Gas Malaysia, represents a significant step in Malaysia’s transition to renewable energy. By converting biogas from organic sources into biomethane, the facility provides a reliable and environmentally friendly energy source, supporting industries and communities. The collaboration leverages Gas Malaysia’s infrastructure and Evonik’s technological expertise to create a scalable model for biogas upgrading across the country.

This initiative enhances Malaysia’s energy security and environmental sustainability, fostering economic benefits through local clean energy production. The project aligns with national efforts to diversify energy sources, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and promote a greener economy, positioning Malaysia as a leader in renewable energy innovation in Southeast Asia.
