China's Port of Shanghai Sets Record with 203,900 TEUs Handled on August 1

en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Port of Shanghai handled 203,881 TEUs on August 1, surpassing the 200,000-TEU mark for the first time in a single day and setting a new handling record for the port.

This figure is nearly 9% higher than the 187,312 TEUs recorded on June 9. One of the shifts that day completed 71,728 TEUs, also setting a new shift record. In a comparative context, the Port of Shanghai's single-day throughput exceeds Denmark's Fredericia Container Terminal's total annual volume of 164,968 TEUs in 2025 by approximately 39,000 TEUs—a figure that itself was a record for the Fredericia terminal. Shanghai's single-day handling also surpasses the annual throughput of Port Canaveral in Florida.

This peak came after the impact of Typhoon Bavi subsided. The typhoon caused a four-day port suspension in mid-July, and after operations resumed, a large number of ocean-going and feeder vessels arrived simultaneously, putting pressure on berths, yards, and landside operations. Shanghai International Port Group stated that the port fully resumed operations on July 14, maintaining an average daily throughput of approximately 172,000 TEUs while clearing the backlog of vessels and containers.

Several terminals also set their own records during the recovery period. The automated Yangshan Phase IV Terminal completed 29,910 TEUs on August 1, while the Luojing Container Terminal handled 8,373 TEUs.

In the first half of 2026, the Port of Shanghai's container throughput exceeded 28 million TEUs, up 6.2% year-on-year; the Yangshan port area saw throughput grow 8.1% to over 15 million TEUs. In 2025, the port handled 55.06 million TEUs, up 6.9% year-on-year, maintaining its position as the world's largest container port for the 16th consecutive year.
