Spanish EDP launches battery testing at 122 MW wind-solar-storage hybrid project
en.Wedoany.com Reported - EDP has initiated functional testing of the battery energy storage system at the Las Lomillas renewable energy complex in Cuenca Province, Spain, marking the project's entry into its final phase before commercial operation. The complex has a total installed capacity of 122 MW, comprising a 49.5 MW wind farm, a 36 MW photovoltaic plant, and a 36 MW/72 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), all sharing approximately 50 MW of transmission infrastructure.

The Las Lomillas site began operations as a wind farm in 2005, consisting of 33 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 49.5 MW. In 2025, a 36 MW photovoltaic plant was added, and now a 72 MWh electrochemical energy storage system has been incorporated, creating a hybrid generation model designed to maximize the use of the existing grid connection point. According to EDP, this is the first project on the Iberian Peninsula to integrate wind, solar photovoltaic, and electrochemical storage into a single grid connection point, completing a hybridization process initiated two decades ago.
One of the project's most critical technical elements is the Energy Management System (EMS) responsible for coordinating the operation of the three technologies. This system employs optimization algorithms that receive commands from energy management equipment and EDP's control center, determining in real time the optimal destination for the generated energy. Depending on market and grid conditions, the system can inject wind and solar power directly into the grid, store renewable energy in batteries for delivery during higher-value periods, or use grid electricity to charge the storage system for return at more efficient times.
The addition of the BESS enables renewable energy production to adapt to power system demands and improves utilization of the grid connection point. EDP notes that the integration of storage transforms conventional renewable facilities into assets capable of providing greater operational flexibility, contributing both to grid stability and to higher renewable energy integration rates.
The Las Lomillas storage system, with 36 MW of power and 72 MWh of capacity, is part of a funding program by Spain's Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), targeting innovative storage projects hybridized with renewable facilities, financed by the European Union's Next Generation EU funds through the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan. The project has received up to €6.2 million in funding.
In Spain, EDP's hybrid power capacity exceeds 260 MW, distributed across the Cruz de Hierro (Ávila), Villacastín (Segovia), Castillo de Garcimuñoz (Cuenca), and Rabosera (Zaragoza) projects, as well as the current Las Lomillas project. In Portugal, the company began developing such facilities earlier, with hybrid power project capacity approaching 700 MW, combining technologies including hydropower, floating solar, wind, and battery storage.
