en.Wedoany.com Reported - America Makes and the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM) have announced the winners of the "Joint Additive Manufacturing Qualification for Sustainment — Supplier Qualification (JAQS-SQ, Group 2 and Group 3)" project call. Funded by the Office of the Under Secretary of War, Manufacturing Technology Office (OSW ManTech) with a total of $10.5 million, the project aims to qualify laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing (AM) and directed energy deposition (DED) suppliers through unified requirements and training, serving the metal additive manufacturing industrial base.

Building on existing JAQS-SQ efforts, the project strengthens manufacturing readiness and expands defense industrial base (DIB) capabilities through standardized additive manufacturing training and audits, aligning suppliers with acquisition requirements, accelerating the onboarding of non-traditional suppliers, and ensuring sustained qualified production. Training courses will be developed in collaboration with Wichita State University – National Institute for Aviation Research (WSU-NIAR) and will target production and engineering operations managers, teaching them how to effectively implement process control documentation and qualification principles. After suppliers complete the training and integrate the guidelines, they will undergo audits to verify their operational capability as qualified additive manufacturing suppliers for the Department of War (DoW), including demonstrating the ability to execute performance qualification as defined by the curriculum and audit requirements.

A total of 25 project teams were selected. Ben DiMarco, Director of Technology Transition at America Makes, stated that this award marks a pivotal moment for the JAQS initiative and a significant advancement for the defense industrial base. The JAQS network now includes 31 suppliers, forming one of the coordinated additive manufacturing qualification and expansion efforts to support defense readiness. This initiative will accelerate supplier qualification and enhance national manufacturing capabilities. The project is expected to award up to 30 awards in total.
