The solution utilizes ISCC PLUS-certified bio-attributed feedstocks and achieves feedstock traceability and substitution allocation through the mass balance approach.

As electric vehicle production continues to rise globally, automakers' demand for low-carbon materials is becoming increasingly explicit. Seating components account for a significant share of vehicle interiors and represent a key focus area for vehicle carbon reduction. Brooke Bowers, Global Executive Director of Sustainability at Adient, believes that such collaborations can translate innovation into scalable industrial impact, and that working with materials companies like Dow can integrate renewable and bio-circular attributed feedstocks into advanced seating solutions without compromising performance.

According to the two companies, Specflex REN uses ISCC PLUS-certified bio-circular attributed feedstocks, replacing fossil-based raw materials through the mass balance approach, thereby reducing product carbon footprint. The product is designed to deliver comfort and resilience performance comparable to traditional seat foam, while also addressing sustainability metrics.

This achievement relies on collaborative development across the value chain, combining Dow's expertise in materials science and circular chemistry with Adient's experience in seating design and manufacturing. The two companies are driving the scaled adoption of such polyurethane solutions in automotive applications to make the technical pathway of renewable feedstock inputs commercially viable.

ISCC has confirmed that the aforementioned feedstocks fall under the bio-circular category; Specflex REN is linked to ISCC PLUS-certified bio-circular attributed feedstocks through the mass balance approach.
