Coastal Bend LNG Initiates Permitting Process for 19.2 MTPA Project

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Coastal Bend LNG has submitted a request to the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to initiate the pre-filing review process for its planned liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility on the Texas Gulf Coast, thereby entering the formal permitting process. The company expects to file its formal application under Section 3 of the Natural Gas Act in early 2027.

The Coastal Bend LNG project plans four liquefaction trains with a single-train capacity of 4.8 million tonnes per year (MMtpy), for a total nameplate capacity of 19.2 MMtpy, along with associated storage facilities and vessel loading facilities. The project design integrates carbon capture units, enabling the company to enter into contracts for CO₂ transportation and geological sequestration.

Nick Flores, CEO of Coastal Bend LNG, stated that this is a significant milestone for the project, reflecting the company's rigorous approach to engineering, commercial, and regulatory execution. The company looks forward to transparent collaboration with FERC, cooperating agencies, the community, and other stakeholders throughout the review process.

Keith Shoemaker, Chief Commercial Officer of Coastal Bend LNG, added that the project's location on the Texas Gulf Coast offers three geographic advantages that cannot be replicated elsewhere: first, direct access to Texas's abundant natural gas supply; second, proximity to some of the world's most favorable geological formations for carbon sequestration; and third, the project's emissions profile, which aligns with the transparency expectations of the CLEAN Initiative, enables buyers to meet EU Methane Regulation requirements, thereby providing flexibility to serve both Asian and European markets.

Prior to initiating the FERC pre-filing process, the project has completed several earlier milestones, including selecting ConocoPhillips' Optimized Cascade Process as the liquefaction technology and designating KBR and Tecnicas Reunidas as the FEED and EPC contractors. All filing documents were reviewed by the energy regulatory practice team at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP prior to submission.
