en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 13, Nuclea Energy, a Canadian advanced nuclear energy company, signed a definitive agreement with UK-based Moltex Energy, which is under insolvency administration, to acquire Moltex's advanced nuclear reactor and spent fuel recycling technology assets through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Nuclea Energy Canada. The transaction will be paid in cash, with the specific acquisition amount undisclosed, and remains subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.

Nuclea Energy to acquire Moltex Energy technology portfolio

The transaction is primarily an asset acquisition, with the target portfolio mainly comprising the Stable Salt Reactor – Waste Burner (SSR-W), the Waste to Stable Salt (WATSS) spent fuel recycling process, and FLEX reactor-related technologies and R&D materials. The asset portfolio also includes 80 granted patents across 9 patent families, as well as 9 pending patents covering the WATSS process, with the technology scope spanning nuclear fuel, reactors, chemical processes, and materials.

Over the past decade-plus, Moltex's technology portfolio has received more than CAD 96 million in funding, sourced from private investment, Canadian public programs, and the U.S. Department of Energy. The SSR-W is a molten salt fast reactor design with a planned electrical output of 300 to 500 megawatts, using fuel salt made from recycled nuclear materials. Its fuel salt is contained within fuel tubes and does not circulate through the reactor core piping.

The WATSS process is used to treat spent nuclear fuel and produce fuel suitable for advanced reactors such as the SSR-W. In June 2026, Moltex announced that the key stages of this process had been successfully tested at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories using irradiated fuel from commercial heavy water reactors. The SSR-W had previously completed Phase 1 of the Vendor Design Review with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission; this procedure is a pre-licensing technical assessment and does not equate to obtaining a license for reactor construction or operation.

Nuclea Energy is currently developing the Morpheus lead-cooled micro reactor. This unit features a graphite-moderated design with a planned electrical output of approximately 3.5 to 50 megawatts, positioned as a transportable, factory-manufactured modular power supply for applications including data centers, industrial facilities, mines, defense installations, and off-grid communities. Following the acquisition of Moltex's assets, Nuclea's technology portfolio will span micro reactors, advanced modular reactors, larger-scale nuclear power units, and spent fuel recycling.

Nuclea Energy Canada has obtained certain approvals required by agencies including the Strategic Innovation Fund and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. The transaction remains subject to review under the UK's National Security and Investment Act 2021, with the agreement setting a final closing deadline of three months after signing, extendable by written agreement between the parties. Upon completion of the closing, Nuclea plans to retain Moltex Energy Canada to continue undertaking R&D, engineering design, and regulatory filing work for the related technologies.
