Hornbeck Offshore to Evaluate Marine Micro Nuclear Reactors
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 17, U.S. offshore service vessel operator Hornbeck Offshore signed a memorandum of understanding with nuclear energy startup Deployable Energy to evaluate the application of the Unity Nuclear Battery microreactor on vessels, offshore facilities, and floating power supply systems. Hornbeck Offshore also made a strategic investment in Deployable Energy, with the investment amount and equity stake undisclosed.

The two parties plan to establish a joint working group to study system integration of the reactor with vessels, project economics, nuclear safety licensing pathways, financing methods, and commercial cooperation structures, with initial work focused on the U.S. market. Application scenarios under evaluation include inland waterway transportation, offshore support vessels and platforms, national security logistics and autonomous vessels, nuclear-powered power barges, and floating data centers.
The cooperation will proceed through phases including feasibility study, front-end engineering design, detailed design, regulatory approval, first deployment, fleet-scale application, and long-term operation. At this stage, the two parties have not signed any equipment procurement, vessel conversion, or reactor deployment contracts, and subsequent implementation remains subject to technical validation, commercial conditions, regulatory approvals, and the signing of formal agreements.
The Unity Nuclear Battery is a transportable microreactor developed by Deployable Energy, with a designed electrical power output of 1 megawatt per unit, configurable in single-unit or multi-unit combinations, and a designed refueling interval exceeding five years. The system is being developed with the direction of embedding into existing or newbuild vessels, aiming to reduce the need to redesign entire ships around fixed reactors, though specific vessel types, the number of first units, and deployment locations have not yet been determined.
Deployable Energy has proposed that the system's full lifecycle cost targets in offshore diesel power generation, shore power, and off-grid power supply scenarios are at least 20% lower than traditional marine diesel engines or grid power supply; the company has also proposed achieving gigawatt-scale cumulative deployment over the next decade. The aforementioned cost and deployment scale targets are project development goals and do not yet constitute binding orders or investment plans.
In terms of technical validation, the Unity demonstration reactor completed zero-power criticality testing at the Idaho National Laboratory in the United States on June 30. The U.S. Department of Energy confirmed that the test was used to validate core neutronics performance and design models, and that it generated no electricity, produced no usable thermal energy, and involved no sustained power operation. Deployable Energy plans to continue reactor physics, load-following, and inherent safety performance testing, with full-power demonstration targeted for 2027 as the next phase goal.
Hornbeck Offshore primarily operates offshore service vessels in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and Latin America, while also serving U.S. government, offshore wind, and other non-oilfield customers. This memorandum brings its fleet operating experience into microreactor marine application research, but does not yet represent a confirmed nuclear power conversion for its existing vessels.
