Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) Signs Nuclear Power Project Siting Agreement with Gujarat

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 1, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The two parties will jointly screen potential sites suitable for building new nuclear power projects in Gujarat and conduct technical suitability assessments of candidate locations. The agreement also covers preliminary work such as consultations between the two parties on project development and the sharing of relevant information.

What NPCIL signed with GSECL this time is a preliminary cooperation agreement for nuclear power projects, and the current scope of work focuses on potential site identification and technical condition assessment. NPCIL's public information has not yet provided specific candidate sites, nor has it disclosed the reactor technology route, the number of planned units, unit capacity, total investment amount, or construction timetable.

NPCIL currently operates the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station in Gujarat. Among its units, Units 3 and 4 adopt India's domestically developed 700MWe pressurized heavy water reactor technology and have successively entered commercial operation between 2023 and 2024. NPCIL's official website also lists Mithi Virdi in Gujarat as a new nuclear power site that has received in-principle approval for preliminary project activities, with a planned configuration of six 1000MWe light water reactors.

NPCIL currently has 24 operable nuclear power units, with a total installed capacity of nearly 8GWe, and another 8 units, totaling approximately 6GWe, are under construction. The Indian government has proposed increasing the country's nuclear power installed capacity to 100GWe by 2047. The cooperation between NPCIL and GSECL is still at the site study stage, and subsequent work needs to be further advanced based on the technical assessment results of candidate locations.
