Wärtsilä to Supply 13 Gas Engines to a 300MW Power Plant in Australia
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Finland-based Wärtsilä has secured an equipment order for a 300MW reciprocating engine power plant in Australia and will supply 13 46TS-SG gas engines for the project. The order has been included in Wärtsilä's order intake for the third quarter of 2026. The project owner and the specific construction site have not yet been disclosed. Equipment delivery is planned for early 2029, and the power plant is expected to enter full operation in 2030.

The project will use Wärtsilä 46TS-SG large spark-ignited lean-burn gas engines. According to Wärtsilä product materials, this series has a maximum mechanical output of 23.4MW per unit, an electrical efficiency of 51.3%, a fastest start-to-full-load time of approximately 2 minutes, and no minimum continuous running or shutdown time restrictions. The engine platform is available in 16V and 18V configurations, with corresponding rated electrical power outputs of 20.38MW and 22.93MW respectively; Wärtsilä did not disclose the specific cylinder configuration adopted for the Australian project.
In terms of fuel flexibility, the 46TS-SG can currently use natural gas and supports hydrogen blending at up to 25% by volume. In this order announcement, Wärtsilä confirmed that all 13 units will be configured after the project is commissioned, and the power plant's operational role includes rapid start-stop, load regulation, and grid balancing.
This model was launched in 2025 and features a two-stage turbocharging system, a speed of 600 rpm, a bore of 460 mm, and a piston stroke of 580 mm. In rapid start mode, the equipment can complete grid connection and reach full load in approximately 120 seconds, with a hot load ramp rate of up to 1% per second. These parameters are standard 46TS-SG product performance; specific project performance remains subject to site conditions and fuel conditions.
This Australian order has now entered the equipment supply phase, but Wärtsilä has not yet disclosed the project EPC contractor, power purchase arrangements, gas supply plan, or specific grid connection point. According to the announced schedule, the next substantive milestone is equipment delivery in early 2029, followed by on-site installation, commissioning, and preparation for operation.
