Bangladesh and the Netherlands Sign MoU to Promote Circular Development in the Textile Sector
en.Wedoany.com Reported - The governments of Bangladesh and the Netherlands signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on August 17 to cooperate in the circular economy within the textile value chain. Bangladesh's Commerce Secretary, Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, and the Netherlands' Minister for Climate and Green Growth, Stientje van Veldhoven-van der Meer, signed on behalf of their respective sides.

The MoU establishes a cooperation framework addressing topics such as improving resource efficiency, reducing waste, building recyclable production systems, and adopting industrial processes with lower environmental impact within the textile value chain. Following the signing, Muktadir stated that given the deep integration of Bangladesh's apparel supply chain with the international market, the global textile industry must now transition toward circular and sustainable production models. He described the MoU as a significant step in advancing the bilateral partnership toward a greener, more resilient, and more future-oriented economy.
Muktadir noted that the circular economy is not only about environmental protection but is also directly linked to enhancing the long-term competitiveness of Bangladesh's export sector. He believes that the circular economy helps maximize resource utilization efficiency, attract sustainable investment, create green jobs, and assist domestic industries in adapting to new requirements in the international market.
Dutch Minister Stientje van Veldhoven-van der Meer described the expansion of the circular economy as a high priority and emphasized that this transition requires concerted efforts from the international community. She said, "No country can complete this transition alone. The entire supply chain requires international cooperation, business partnerships, and coordinated initiatives." She revealed that officials from both countries have already held discussions on priority areas of cooperation, and the next step must be swift action to turn those discussions into tangible results. She also expressed the Netherlands' interest in cooperating with Bangladesh both bilaterally and through international platforms, and voiced optimism about establishing a more efficient and results-oriented partnership.
Bangladesh's Ministry of Commerce expects that the MoU will create new development opportunities for the country's textile and apparel industry by promoting green technologies, fostering innovation, and advancing sustainable production models to enhance international competitiveness.
